瓦烏布日赫是波蘭西南部人口最多的城市,自1935年開始發展煤礦產業。90年代時,這座城市的礦區因為社會與經濟的變動而崩潰,當地的居民因此經歷了隨之而來的解雇潮及從中產生的社會危機感。在今日瓦市有了復甦跡象的同時,本片敘述遷移進這座城市空間的人們面對現實處境的景況。偏離實際發生的歷史細節與經濟剖析,本片描繪了一幅人類學的風景,以視覺與聽覺交錯著自然的聲響、談話、及樂音,呈現出時空的氛圍。

A former mining site since 1535, Walbrzych is the most populated city in south-western Poland. During the 1990s, the town’s coal mines were shut down due to societal and economic changes. As a result, the people of Walbrzych experienced a social crisis from the accompanying dismissal of hundreds of workers. While the city today show signs of renewal, this film illustrates the people moving within the city’s spaces confronting their reality. Digressing from historical and economic analysis on the details that took place, the film paints an anthropological portrait; a representation of a place and time filtered through visuals and musical scores of natural sounds, speeches and instrumental music.

重攝藝術家[藝術家與真實性]

藝術家無論在虛構還是傳記電影中總被描述得舉止脫俗,擁有轟轟烈烈的羅曼史、和酗酒自毀的失控行為。於是,我們很容易存有先入為主的概念,那就是創作總是含有某種迷思的指涉;例如所有藝術家都是利用某種媒材的畫家。這樣的刻板印象更確立了電影中對於視覺藝術家們的扭曲表述。

在本片中,大芬油畫村裡的複製畫家擷取出大約五十部不同的電影片段,例如《畫家波拉克》(2000)、《狂愛走一回》(1996)、《美麗壞女人》(1991)等,並拿來重新搬演。位於中國廣東深圳的大芬油畫村,是世界上最大的手繪油畫製造地區,供應全球大部分的西洋藝術市場。村裡的複製畫家變身為業餘演員,重新搬演多部關於藝術家的電影場景。大量製造大師油畫作品,伴隨使用對藝術家在電影中的刻板印象,交融成為一種新的敘述形式,創造出虛擬與紀實交疊的影片。我們如何看待這些們同時擁有視覺藝術家及中國複製畫家的「他者」身分?Pohle在本片中以這類文本上的變換,或者稱之為「重攝藝術家」的方式,對觀眾提出問題。

Artists are often portrayed having idiosyncratic behaviors, torrid love affairs, uncontrollable acts of inebriated self-destruction, or all of the aforementioned, whether in fictional or biopic films. Therefore, it is apparent that there is a preconceived notion where creative production signifies a mystification of one thing or another; such as all artists are painters by medium. These stereotypes reconfirm the failing representation of visual artists in film.

In this video, fragments from roughly fifty different films such as Pollock (2000), Surviving Picasso (1996), or La belle noiseuse (1991) are reenacted by copyist employed in the Oil Painting Village of Dafen. Situated in Shenzhen, China, Dafen is the world’s largest area of mass-produced handmade oil-on-canvas paintings supplying a global market sourced largely from Western art. The copyists in the Oil Painting Village take on different roles as amateur actors by re-enacting scenes from various films depicting artists. The mass production of master oil paintings coupled with the recurrent use of artist stereotypes in films intersects into forming a new narrative thus creating an overlap of fiction and documentary.

This shift of context, or “Reframing the Artist,” raises questions about how we
view the exotic “other” which is both the visual artist as well as the Chinese copyists.

Sascha Pohle is an Gernam artist living the Netherlands with an interest in our collective relation towards popular culture. Intrigued by seeing others re-enacting and himself as the re-enactor, Pohle investigates how images in the media interfere with our perspective of reality. By adapting elements from films and photographic imagery as references, the context of appropriation is reinterpreted through the artist’s own videos, drawings and prints.

All the same great films from Taipei are traveling to Hsinchu for the last two weeks of May. On 5/23, several environmentalists will be on hand for the screening of Sharkwater and Taiwan's Critically Endangered Pink Dolphins. These incluede Mr. Tsai Jia-yang (Head of the Changhua County Environmental Protection Alliance) and A-da (activist-singer). Urban Nomad director David Frazier will also be there. 新竹市影像博物館將於5月16日至5月30日,於影像博物館舉辦「城市游牧影展」新竹巡演活動。播映數十部探討當代重要議題的著名影片,及台灣新生代創作者的最新作品。題材從前衛文化思潮,環保,經濟,到第三世界獨立音樂,帶來有別於主流消費文明的清新視野,及深刻的感官震撼。現場並將邀請知名獨立樂團「農村武裝青年」舉辦小型演唱會。

5月16日晚間7時,將播映開幕片:由當代知名學者娜歐蜜•克蘭Naomi Klein同名著作改編的紀錄片《震撼主義》(THE SHOCK DOCTRINE),探討極端資本主義在世界各地所引發的效應;

5月23日下午2時,將播映記錄台灣西海岸稀有物種白海豚的《2010年份台灣的極危險瀕臨絕種白海豚》、以及獲加拿大國際影展十大最佳影片的《救鯊行動》(Sharkwater),探討因魚翅在中華料理佔有一席之地,而面臨過度捕殺的鯊魚生態現況。並邀請彰化縣環保聯盟理事長,生物學家蔡嘉陽先生,以及知名獨立樂團「農村武裝青年」主唱阿達,共同出席座談。阿達將於會後在現場開唱他為白海豚創作的最新原創歌曲。

歌手馬修 連恩是今天晚上的貴賓之一,關於這次的首映他表示:

“我很興奮能出席 "血色海灣"在台灣的首映會。

這是歷史上首次,我們的孩子,出生於一個面臨全球環境問題的世界。

去年,我成為了台灣兒子的父親。但我替他感到難過,因為他的台灣,正面臨了黯淡的未來。

在台灣,我兒子的天然棲息地逐漸消失,污染正摧毀他美麗的生態系,他的海洋也由於二氧化碳酸化,致使珊瑚礁無法生存。

但我們~現在的大人,還有時間做一些重要的選擇,其中一個是我們是否要拯救台灣白海豚免於滅絕。

感謝像"血色海灣"這樣的紀錄片,讓更多人察覺危機正朝海洋逼近。我希望在台灣放映這部電影,能讓我們決定孩子生長的台灣,和台灣白海豚,是如此珍貴而不能失去的。

我們的子孫應得我們的關心。”

Canadian singer-songwriter and long-time Taiwan resident Matthew Lien will be an honored guest at tonight's screening of THE COVE. Here's what he has to say about why he's coming:

“I am thrilled to attend the screening of "The Cove" in Taiwan.

For the first time in history, our children today are being born into the world with a global environmental crisis.

Last year, I became the father of a Taiwanese son. But I feel sad for him, because his Taiwan is facing a dismal future.

Here in Taiwan. my son's natural habitat is disappearing, pollution is destroying his beautiful ecosystems, and his ocean is becoming so acidic from CO2 that coral reefs can not survive.

But we -- the adults of today -- have time to make some important choices. One choice is whether we will save Taiwan's Pink Dolphins from extinction.

Thanks to documentaries like "The Cove", more people are becoming aware of the crisis facing our oceans. I hope showing this movie in Taiwan will help us decide that our children's Taiwan, and Taiwan Pink Dolhpins, are too precious to lose.

Our children deserve our concern.”

2010 城市遊牧影展: 內容介紹



第九屆城市遊牧影展大約有50部短片電影以及9部長片電影輪番播映,從4月30日起一連九天將在華山創意園區與其他地方舉辦影片放映、音樂表演與座談會,還有一部奧斯卡得獎影片的首映會等各種精彩活動,遊牧影展將會再次創造全台最好玩影展的好口碑。短片的部份今年特別精彩,在5月7日頒奬典禮上,將會有三位來自不同領域的評審,包含濁水溪樂隊主唱小柯、獨立策展人徐文瑞、 2010台灣國際紀錄片雙年展策展人王耿瑜,要一起來選出2010年遊牧獎的得主。國外的邀請片則充滿話題性,部部都受到國外各地大影展觀影人的肯定。其中《救鯊行動》是全球14個影展的得獎佳片、《Copyright Criminals》是電音掛或嘻哈掛非看不可的一部片、《震撼主義》則是著名左派作者娜歐蜜‧克蘭(Naomi Klein)的最新大作…眾多強片無法一一介紹,所以只能說,我們真希望各位朋友能過來一起玩,一起喝一杯啤酒,更重要的當然是一起欣賞好電影囉!

2. 從《血色海灣》看台灣鯨豚的處境

* 海生館的鯨豚從哪裡來?

保育人士努力救鯨豚,海生館卻鼓勵「獵捕」 : 全球海域每每發生鯨豚擱淺事件時,總有無數專業人士及義工投入救援,協助牠們回家與家人團聚,但同時卻有一群假學術之名的「商人、學者」,不斷迫害智慧極高、和人類同樣是哺乳動物的鯨豚,讓牠們遠離海洋家園,將牠們關進玻璃箱內,訓練牠們為人類進行「馬戲表演」。

* 台灣的極危險瀕臨絕種白海豚

媽祖魚(中華白海豚)是台灣海洋生態資源的重要指標,由於沿海環境日漸惡化,目前數量可能僅在60至90隻之間,已被國際自然保育聯盟IUCN列為瀕臨絕種的族群,每一隻白海豚的死亡都是台灣無可彌補的巨大損失。

3. 從《救鯊行動》看台灣的海鮮文化

* 魚翅文化背後的殘忍事實

世界自然保育聯盟(IUCN)有關鯊魚族群量的研究指出,現有111種鯊魚的生存已出現危機,如果人類持續過度捕撈漁業資源,2048年以後,人類將只剩水母可以食用。
魚翅係指鯊魚之背鰭、捕獲的鯊魚在割下魚鰭後,會將較無價值的魚身丟回海中,讓牠們在海裡慢慢流血、痛苦死亡,民眾根本無法確定所食用的魚翅,是屬於「全魚利用」還是以「活割魚鰭」方式取得...

* 最血腥的健康食品

台灣各大連鎖藥妝店及購物頻道大量行銷販售的海豹、海狗油和海狗鞭,全部來自被殘忍屠殺的野生小海豹。根據統計,2003~2009年間,台灣從加拿大輸入海洋哺乳類油脂(即海豹油)為431,364公斤,名列全球第4大、亞洲第3大;保守估計,台灣消費者近七年來等於間接屠殺了12萬隻美麗而無辜的海豹、海狗!

* Where does the National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium get its dolphins?

While conservations work to protect dolphins and whales, the National Aquarium promotes dolphin roundups. Dolphin roundups like that documented in THE COVE are no doubt senselessly destructive, but they can continue because ocean parks all over the world continue to purchase dolphins from them. Also, what are the ethical issues involved in keeping dolphins in small tanks and forcing them to live out their lives performing circus tricks?

* Taiwan's critically endangered dolphins

The Indo-European humpback dolphin, locally known as "Matsu's fish," is an important indicator of the health of coastal ecosystems. At present, there may be as few as 60-90 of these dolphins remaining, and they have been listed as "critically endangered" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). What can be done to save this species from extinction?

3. 《SHARKWATER》and Local Seafood Culture

* The dark side of shark's fin soup

Research by the IUCN on shark populations indicates that 111 species of sharks can now be considered "endangered." It has been said that if current rates of overfishing continue, by 2048, the only think left in the ocean to catch will be jellyfish. The problem with shark finning, is that while shark's fins are highly valuable, their meat is often considered worthless. So sharks are caught, de-finned and tossed back into the sea, thereby destroying a predator at the top of the ocean food chain and ruining ecosystems on which we all depend.

* Environmentally Unfriendly Health Food

Seal oil is available in nearly every pharmacy in Taiwan as well as numerous mass market retailers, and all of it comes from hideous seal slaughters. Between 2003 and 2009, Taiwan has imported 431,364 kilos of seal oil (mainly in caplet form), the 4th largest total in the world! During this seven year period, Taiwanese are estimated to be responsible for the deaths of 120,000 seals.

4. Protecting the Ocean: What can I do?

Representatives from EAST and Matsu's Fish Conservation Union will report on recent activities by their organizations and how people can make a difference either in their everyday lives or participate in conservation activities.

跨國農企業到底有什麼問題?不僅讓糧價變得不穩,還掠取印度古老小麥品種,以生物剽竊、基因改造技術,讓種子也有了專利,迫使10多萬小農舉債而自殺!

紀錄片《牛糞傳奇》以印度知名的生態女性主義運動者、1993年另類諾貝爾獎得主范達娜˙席娃博士(Vandana Shiva)為主角;紀錄她長年對抗如孟山都(Monsanto)等跨國企業,並成立「九種基金會」(Navdanya),證明社區的「種子銀行」可以讓小農免於跨國企業掌控種子,甚至可以培育種子的多樣性,發展出能因應全球暖化的好品種。

Her opponents call her “The Green Killer”. They gave her “The Bullshit Award” for sustaining poverty. Time magazine says she is a hero of our times, an icon for youngsters all over the world. Vandana Shiva is an Indian environmental activist and nuclear physicist, and in this film she ventures out from her organic farm to do battle with the likes of Coca Cola and Monsanto, a huge American agri-tech company that tries to patent an ancient Indian strain of wheat.

如果你喜歡奧斯卡提名記錄片《絕望真相》,你更不可錯過這部由娜歐蜜‧克蘭Naomi Klein同名著作改編的紀錄片《極端資本教義派》。本紀錄片將帶著我們追蹤,美國政府如何操弄外交策略以圖利美國企業,從智利的皮諾切特政變到兩伊戰爭,極端資本教義派大刀過處,無處不是戰火孤魂;導彈、坦克夷平的是平民百姓對邪惡資本主義企業最後的心防和抵抗。作者克蘭筆下的「毀滅性資本主義」之惡行惡狀更在本紀錄片中盡顯無遺,必定會搖醒你那久被資本主義麻痺的良知。

This documentary is based on the book of the same name by Naomi Klein (No Logo), author, activist and noted critic of globalization. It outlines Klein’s concept of “disaster capitalism,” in which government use or even create disasters to give corporations greater power over normal citizens. Klein shows that the tactic of “shocking” populations into accepting extreme levels of privatization and corporate control is an active goal of American foreign policy. She traces this strategy’s disasterous results from Pinochet’s coup in Chile to the two Iraq wars and everything in between. If you liked The Corporation or An Inconvenient Truth, this is definitely a film for you.

許雅婷是一位住在芝加哥的台灣導演而她最新作品〈放心漫舞〉則在描述另一位與老年癡呆症搏鬥的年邁導演Chris隨著事件漸漸失去控制電影本身的架構也如同Chris的記憶力一樣變得愈來愈模糊也逐漸崩成碎片。〈少年心〉是一部出人意料,令人感動的故事,其他的影片則是奇幻的動畫及實驗短片。

Hsu Ya-ting is a Taiwanese filmmaker living in Chicago, and her latest short, MIND DANCE, depicts Chris, an aged filmmaker, struggling with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. As reality slips out of his control, Chris’ memories become disorganized and the film itself literally breaks into fragments. MY HEART, MY SOUL surprised us as a touching and unexpectedly serious drama. The rest of the program consists of charming animations and video experiments.

許芳宜是第一位受邀至紐約Baryshnikov藝術中心駐村的亞洲舞者而這支影片記錄著他在當時工作的狀態。此片不僅僅帶來令人屏息的舞蹈同時也帶來許芳宜在工作室排舞時對此藝術的最高精神,許芳宜著實是台灣藝文界最有才華的藝術家之一。這支紀錄片將會以不同版本撥映讓我們更加貼近她的世界。

Sheu Fang-yi was the first Asian artist ever invited for a residency at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York, and this film documents her working process there in creating a new performance. The filming not only shows some arrestingly beautiful dancing, it also shows Sheu and the choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava starting from the blank canvas of the practice studio to choreograph a work of the highest art. Sheu is truly one of Taiwan’s most stunning creative talents, and this documentary – shown here in a brand new version – is up to the task of displaying her somatic genius and bringing us into her world.

〈搶救烏山頭水庫〉在講一個驚人的真實事件: 一個垃圾掩埋場公司危害到台灣重要的水庫之一。〈希望〉除了有馬英九總統友情客串之外我們也會呈現當年被莫拉克颱風的大水及土石流沖毀的小學重建。〈Silence〉是一部告訴我們何為報章雜誌報導好處的冰島短片,〈誰在乎真實〉則是在反諷G8高峰會,接著〈熱舞天堂〉帶來一個競選期間無家可歸的流浪漢穿梭在台北接頭的故事。節目將會由幾支大自然動畫做開場。

LET’S FIGHT FOR WATER is about a startlingly real issue: a landfill that threatens to contaminate one of Taiwan’s main mountain reservoirs. HOPE, guest starring president Ma Ying-jeou, meanwhile documents the reconstruction of an elementary school following the floods and mudslides of Typhoon Morokot. SILENCE is an Icelandic short that tells us what newspaper reporting is good for, and WHO CARES ABOUT THE REAL spoofs the G8. HEAVENLY DANCE follows a homeless man through Taipei at election time, and the program begins with a couple animations, NATURE and UNDERSTATEMENT.

在緬甸,加州聯合石油公司和法國道達爾石油公司為保護該公司的油管工程,僱用緬甸軍政府的軍隊,在油管區進行非人道行為:武力脅迫、施虐及強暴當地居民。緬甸人權民運人士卡索瓦Ka Hsaw Wa多次進出該地區,冒著生命危險,記錄下遭到政府加害的人民慘況和種族屠殺現場。他拍攝的影片間接促成美國史上第一起跨國控告人權侵害的訴訟案,這起官司纏訟將近十年後,卡索瓦以及他的族人們終於獲得平反。

This documentary investigates the human rights abuses associated with the construction of an oil pipeline in Burma funded by western oil companies, UNOCAL and TOTAL. It is also the story of the one-man mission of Burmese activist Ka Hsaw Wa, a former jungle warrior wanted by authorities both in Myanmar and Thailand. Ka risks his life in video-taped border crossings to document burned out villages and scenes of genocide, all funded by US oil companies and executed by the Myanmar’s junta government. His footage and reports result in a landmark court case in the US. It is the first time foreign nationals bring a class action lawsuit against US companies – and win!

〈揉〉是一部挺詭異的實驗動畫片,〈映〉挺像是一部改編自西班牙詩人Julio Cortazar作品的影片倘述孤寂酒精友誼及死亡,〈嘎轟!〉裡有蘋果,〈Greedy〉則有黑幫,〈Fuhrerbunker〉 似乎有希特勒。〈愛在森林邊境〉是一部關於二次大戰後,共產崛起期間,在馬來西亞的青春與愛情小品。

ROUE is experimental animation at its weirdest. THE REFLECTION is a sort of poem on loneliness, alcohol, friendship, death adopted from writing of Julio Cortazar. CAJON! has apples, GREEDY has gangsters, and FUHRERBUNKER has Hitler (sort of). CUL DE SAC FOREST is a wonderful period piece about youth and love in Malaysia just after World War II during communist uprisings.

近十年的這場巴勒斯坦居民和以色列士兵的衝突戰爭,仍然於加薩走廊持續進行著。

這部影片是數月前才由各國的激進份子發表的,他們試圖打破這場僵局,並企圖揭穿這些倚著和平口號,實為殘暴鎮壓的虛偽行動。在2008年12月與2009年一月份,以色列強制命令所有國外的救援組織和觀察員徹離加薩走廊,發動為期21天的「鑄鉛行動」轟炸。影片的製片者,也是轟炸中的倖存者,加入巴勒斯坦救護車的司機所組成的自願單位,他們參與以色列炸彈攻擊中那些危險、致命且不受人注目的人道救援任務。這是一個真實且正在進行的世界,一個讓製片者以及你我都無法容忍的世界。

The conflict in the Gaza Strip between Palestinian locals and the Israeli army has been going on for decades. This film was released only months ago by a group of international activists bent on finding a way through the impasse and holding up a mirror to atrocities committed in the name of “peace.” In December 2008 and January 2009, Israeli forces instructed all foreign aid organizations and observers to vacate Gaza for the 21-day bombardment of Operation Cast Lead. The filmmakers however remained, embedding themselves with a volunteer unit of Palestinian ambulance drivers, who go into the teeth of the Israel bombs and bullets on a deadly and thankless humanitarian mission. It is a situation, which the filmmakers find, is simply unacceptable.

The documentary follows internationally acclaimed DJ, Wesley Pentz (aka Diplo) as he ventures into gangland territory, exploring both a music and dance phenomena. Pentz is now credited with discovering the genre of “baile funk,” and popularizing it in the US and Europe through CD releases. Born of one of the most violent and poorest places on earth, the music is raw and personal. This documentary tells stories of sex, love, poverty, and pride amongst Rio's most marginalized people. It follows heroes and villains, and the irresistible urge to dance.

Is sampling a crime? In this documentary, the cast of musicians, producers and industry executives weighing in on the issue ranges from funk legend George Clinton to Nirvana’s producer Steve Albini to copyright lawyers. Despite the serious issue at hand, this is truly a doc for the music junkie. Scenes show DJs playing mixes and mashups, and these are dissected in split-screen montages to show how the original music is sampled, cut and refashioned to suit new tastes. One extensive thread is the case of Clyde Stubblefield, James Brown’s former drummer, whose drum solo on the tune “Funky Drummer” has become THE MOST SAMPLED beat in hip hop history. Other musicians and groups to appear include DJ Qbert, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Chibo Matto, Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky tha Subliminal Kid and many others.

在假如我是真的裡,一位外科醫生請電影工作者紀錄下他結束自己生命前的最後幾天因為他得了不治之症愛滋病但結局卻急轉直下出乎大家的預料,〈The Hobby〉一部同樣詭譎的法國片述說著如何習以承擔生活,〈極光〉就像環保主題的 「 樂一通(華納兔寶寶) 」 緊接著我們會連續播放兩部衝浪的影片。

In ON/OFF, a doctor tells a filmmaker he has AIDS and asks him to document his final days before he commits suicide, and then the film gets seriously weird. THE HOBBY, French and also bizarre, is about habituating to life as an undertaker. SKYLIGHT is like Looney Tunes for the eco movement. And then we have two killer surf vids as a segue to the feature.

導演羅勃‧史都華Rob Stewart熱愛潛水,穿梭在悠藍大海中讓他深深地愛上了兇猛而美麗的鯊魚,然而,他不禁為鯊魚垂淚,因為,每年一百萬頭鯊魚枉死造成全球鯊魚數量銳減,鯊魚存亡岌岌可危,導演史都華憑著一股對海洋的熱愛,決心找出殘殺鯊魚的真兇並記錄鯊魚兇面利齒背後的弱小與無助‧中華頂級料理,魚翅湯,原料來自鯊魚的背鰭,為滿足台港華人的口腹之慾,每年大量鯊魚遭不人道捕殺,許多甚至削去背鰭後被丟回海中,任其慘死,導演史都華深入調查,竟發現台灣黑道涉入其間,控制魚翅黑市,勢力遠至中美洲。為阻止非法捕殺,史都華加入海洋守護者協會,巡防遠洋非法捕鯨、獵鯊行為,為此,他會捲入怎樣的風暴之中?衝突一觸即發,搶救鯊魚總動員,開始!

Filmmaker Rob Stewart is a free diver and self-professed shark lover, who has seen shark populations worldwide decimated. The film, named one of “Canada’s Top 10” at the Toronto International Film Festival, estimates around 100 million sharks are being harvested each year, and many of them simply have their fins cut off and are thrown back into the ocean. Shark fins feed a growing trade in shark’s fin soup, a delicacy in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Taiwan and an illegal trade which Stewart discovers is being controlled by the Taiwanese mafia as far away as central America. In his quest to stop illegal shark fishing, he joins the crew of Sea Shepherd, and infamous activist group known for battling illegal fishing and whaling operations on the high seas. Together, they enter into dangerous confrontations at sea and even face jail in the courts of Costa Rica.

這部影片為台灣極度瀕危的印太洋駝海豚(媽祖魚)所面臨的威脅及在地保育運動者遭逢的問題提供一個概觀。大規模的工業發展和密集的漁業行為已經改變了牠們的棲地,也使這個族群蒙受滅絕的危機。在數個重大開發案環伺而缺乏實際保育作為的當下,媽祖魚保育聯盟的陳秉亨提出了大哉問:「台灣到底有沒有要保護白海豚」?

For years, local activist groups have been fighting to save a critically endangered population of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins in the Taiwan Strait. Industrial pollution is threatening to kill off these pink dolphins, known locally as “Matsu’s Fish.” This film, a Taiwan premier, asks the question: when will Taiwan start to take its environment seriously?

是今年2010奧斯卡最佳紀錄片得主,也同時贏得各大影展餘50多個獎項,包含日舞影展觀眾票選最佳紀錄片獎。本片令人憤慨的調查之旅將帶我們進入一個持續進行幾十年,世界上最令人髮指之一的綠色和平犯罪活動的危險海灣。

美國60年代當紅電視影集《飛寶》的海豚訓練師-瑞克•歐巴瑞Ric O'Barry帶領一個由社運份子和潛水精英所組成的團隊潛入日本和歌山縣太地町海灣,為揭發海豚圍捕真相,無視於警方的警告及肢體恐嚇。因為在這裡,每年有2萬3千隻的海豚遭到屠殺。這段日官方不斷反覆辯稱「為科學研究」並視為惡夢的鯨豚大屠殺的恐怖影片片段,目前已呈現給國際捕鯨委員會的當權者。

然而,此片之所以選擇將日本太地町的屠殺公諸於世,最大的擔憂及因素也是我們如何因過度漁獵而造成海洋生態滅絕。如同瑞克•歐巴瑞Ric O'Barry在片中所說:「若是我們無法改變什麼,那也不必理會其他更重要的事件了,因為根本就沒有希望。」

The Cove

The Cove won the 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary, in addition to over 50 other film festival awards, including Audience Choice for Best Documentary at Sundance. The film is an investigative thrill ride, leading us into a dangerous natural cove where one of the world’s worst environmental crimes has been taking place for decades. Ric O'Barry, the dolphin trainer from the TV show Flipper, leads a team of divers and activists who defy police warnings and physical threats to shed light on a dolphin roundup in Taiji, Japan, where 23,000 dolphins are slaughtered each year. Chilling footage from this annual slaughter is presented to the authorities at an International Whaling Commission, to the horror of Japanese officials who continue to defend the slaughter of whales for “scientific purposes.” The greater concern of the film, however, is how we are killing the oceans through overfishing. The reason they choose to make their point in Taiji, Japan is, as O’Barry says in the film, “If we can’t fix that, forget about the bigger issues. There’s no hope.”

因為許多朋友問3月10日的今天是寄件或收件的截止日,先稍微說明,我們是以收件3月10日為截止日但是若遲了一天我們還是會收的,只是在評審時分數會有所斟酌。大概一個禮拜之後,我們也打算把收件的清單貼上這本網站,請大家注意,入圍的清單與2010年播放時間表要4月1日左右宣佈,我們會以本網站和 Facebook 發這個訊息。之外,今年的國外影片也有一些很大很大的消息,事情一確認,就馬上跟大家分享!

堂堂邁入第九屆的影展今年依舊缺你不可!新年新氣象,今年獎金總額提高到新台幣15,000元,各位影音創作好漢們,快點將手上的大作整理一番,趕在截止日前踴躍的投件。別忘了,截止日期分別為 2010年3月1日(國外徵片與40分鐘以上之長片);2010年3月10日(國內徵片與短片),影展將於4月底在台北舉行,隨後巡展至新竹。

近年來的各種氣候變遷異象,對整個星球上的生態影響甚鉅,去年年底才在丹麥哥本哈根舉行完的UN Climate Change Conference也是爭議重重,因此,今年我們選定<環境>作為2010年度主題。不過,身為台灣唯一的地下影展且能將視野侷限?所以各種題材的大作我們都歡迎啦!徵選類型不限國際,可以是實驗性藝術片、劇情片、紀錄片、動畫、喜劇、有關政治、音樂、性別、社會專題、滑板、衝浪…只要你想的到,拍得出來的,快把它投遞到遊牧影展,與來自各地的參展者、參觀者一起分享吧!徵片種類的項目如下:

- 短片,就是剛才列出的各種題材,像往年一樣都歡迎您投來
- 長片,40分鐘以上的影片要早一點送來,截止日期為3月1日
- 錄像藝術 (video art),我們計畫將與一個新開幕的藝術空間,合作辦展覽與錄像藝術的趴替
- 惡搞 (kuso),今年遊牧影展還有新的怪誕徵片—1-3分鐘的kuso短片—強力徵求中!

- 影片製作年份須在 2008-2010 年之間
- 請勿重複投遞往年曾經投遞過的作品
- 每則影片須相應填具一張申請書

UN2010: Open Call for Films

Taiwan's indie showcase for short films, docs and video art!

The Urban Nomad Film Fest is now accepting entries for its ninth annual festival, to take place in Taipei and Hsinchu starting April 30, 2010. There are NT$15,000 in prizes for the best short local films. The entry deadline is March 10 for short films, and March 1 for films over 40-minutes or coming from outside Taiwan.

This year we're getting with the environmental program, so we'll feature a program on the environment. There are just too many great new documentaries on this topic, and we'll debut several of them here in Taiwan. Otherwise, we will present the best new short films from Taiwan and cool-wierd ideas in film from the rest of the world. We also have a new category for 1-3 minute kuso films (kuso is Japanese for "shit" but implies a sense of clowning around.) What are we looking for? Films that are: extreme, socially concerned, political, sex-related, documentary, rock 'n roll, weird, funny, skate/surf, experimental, etc., etc. This year we also have something special in mind for the video art section. We'll also give some kick-ass parties and the best alternative film-watching environment in Taiwan.

International Applications and Features: Every year we invite several international feature-length films and documentaries and 1-2 directors for visits to Taipei. We are especially interested in cutting edge documentaries that would not otherwise be seen in Taiwan. We are looking for films that represent underground, indie or progressive currents, and we are willing to indulge the experimental. Films that fit this year's eco-focus theme are also naturally welcome, as are music films.
DEADLINE FOR FEATURE-LENGTH FILMS: MARCH 1, 2010.

Rules and Suggestions:
- Films under 15 minutes stand a greater chance of getting accepted.
- No more than 12 feature-length films are accepted each year, on average (NEW!!)
- Priority will be given to films with both Chinese and English: in other words, Chinese language films should have English subtitles, and all other films should have Chinese subtitles.
- Films should be produced no earlier than 2008.
- Do not submit the same film you submitted in previous years.
- You must fill out one application form per film you submit.
- Each film should be on its own, separate DVD.
- You can send more than one DVD (and application form) per package.
- It is easiest for us to receive regular or registered mail via the post office.

If your film is accepted, you will be entitled to FREE ENTERY to all Urban Nomad events, including screenings and parties. Basically, we want to hang out with you. Also, if you can speak at the screening of your film, that would be awesome!

Volunteers:
We need translators (English to Chinese) for film subtitles and event Staff for screenings and other events. Send us an email with VOLUNTEER in the subject line. We will contact you 1-2 months before the festival to check your availability.

若下雨,座位有限 / rain = limited seats

大家好,我們真希望今天 (12月18日)晚上7點鐘的時候地是乾的,這樣影片能在戶外播放。不過如果下雨的話,就要把放映的部份移到室內,很可惜的是,室內的座位有限,請大家原諒。(反過來,客滿的房間會暖一點阿)之外,《移動人》展覽,遊牧影展的裝置區,9點鐘的party等活動都還是正常進行,都沒有容量的問題,所以還是希望與大家見面!

We'll be doing screenings of Europe-based indie Directors James Hong, Chen Yin-ju and Simon Chang for the opening of the group exhibition "Mobile Man" at NTUE's new Wolong St. art space. There's a party after the screenings, we'll provide some white russians, and it's FREEE!!!

This Praha Erotica documentary series is not only a behind-the-scenes story of the porn industry in Prague, Czech Republic. With this image montage, I try to question the human side of this trade. After all, for those actors and actress going to the set and having sex with someone they hardly know as a daily/weekly job is certainly far beyond the imagination of most of us. This human side of this business intrigues me, but I’m not trying to make any conclusions here. Instead, I focus on what’s happening on what’s behind the cameras. DIRECTORS IN FOCUS: CHEN YIN-JU and JAMES T. HONG
Chen Yin-ju and James T. Hong are an interdisciplinary art team, producing installations, performances, and film and video works. They have exhibited in the Pompidou Center in Paris and Riena Sofia Museum in Madrid and shown films in the San Francisco International Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival and International Documentary Festival, Amsterdam. They are best known for experimental documentaries portray some of histories deepest ironies in a style that is highly watchable and often funny, despite the grave overtones of their larger message. The six films selected for this program range across the anniversary of Hitler’s death, Japanese biological warfare in WWII, the sexual capital of the white man and other fun topics. This film has been selected for the 2009 Transmediale – Festival for Art and Digital Culture, Berlin and is in the collection of the Archive of Video Art from Eastern Europe. Simon’s short film Evaporation (2008) showed in numerous film festivals in Europe and Urban Nomad 2009.

SIMON CHANG is a 31-year-old Taiwanese photographer, filmmaker and writer living in Prague since 2003. Over the last six years, he has used film and still black-and-white photographs to collect stories from eastern Europe, including the prize winning series “They/Oni,” a documentary about Bohnice mental hospital in Prague. He applies a rigorous documentary style to his subjects, which have also included Czech huntsmen, a traditional Czech circus family, a remote Roman village in Hungry, and most recently a documentary about the Czech Republic porn industry.

Simon was born in Taipei and began acting in TV commercials as a high school student, appearing in ads for Nissan, Mitsubishi, MTV Taiwan and others. He majored in fine arts at Fujen Catholic University, and received local prizes for short films he directed. For more, see: www.simon.chinito.com

《資本主義萬萬歲》(2006/5分鐘/陳瀅如、洪子健)
西方資本主義歷史的符號象徵。科技的發展過程中,科技應是資本累積與戰爭的服侍者,但在石油世紀與戰爭的當下,科技卻代表了資本主義。此片靈感來自於俄國藝術家馬勒維奇提出的「絕對主義」(Suprematism)與當今的石油戰爭。作品中的影像符號適於任何畫質解析度的螢幕,大至戲院小至手機或iPod螢幕。

《希特勒地堡:遊客、新納粹,或是… 4月30日2009年》

一九四五年四月三十日,希特勒於柏林的藏身地堡舉槍自盡。本片呈現六十四年後的同一天與同一地點,會有哪些人出沒,什麼事發生?

《恆殤》(2009/23分鐘/陳瀅如、洪子健)
本片紀錄在二次大戰期間,研發生化武器的日本731部隊所留下的遺毒,以及被波及的被害者。

《全面動員》 (2005/8分鐘/陳瀅如、洪子健)
遷徙與移民是事實亦是命途。美國白人的逐漸消失有可能終結美國強權,西方世界也許只剩下歐洲與其殖民地。沒有了美國,所謂的西方只剩下歐亞大陸末端的一小角。〈全面動員〉是一部諷刺、誇張的實驗片,利用集體奮鬥的螞蟻作為隱喻。它也許影射美國白人的隱懮,又或許是直接陳述事實,端看觀眾如何詮釋。

《財‧縫》 (2008/8分鐘/陳瀅如)
一位台灣母親日夜辛勞地為貴婦人裁製衣服賺錢,以支付女兒在美就學的昂貴學費。全片以一通討論信用卡開支的母女越洋電話為對白,影像則呈現詳細的縫紉工作過程,企圖表達傳統亞洲父母為了孩子無怨無悔的奉獻。

《台北101:病徵紀實》 (2004/23分鐘/洪子健)
一位亞裔美國人在台灣如同朝聖般的尋根之旅中,看到世界最高的建築–台北101;他意外的發現台灣的文化意識被美國文化明顯而強勢的侵略,並沾污成為全球化、美國化、資本主義化、以及跨越國際的白人強權。

Chen Yin-ju and James T. Hong are an interdisciplinary art team, producing installations, performances, and film and video works. They have exhibited in the Pompidou Center in Paris and Riena Sofia Museum in Madrid and shown films in the San Francisco International Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival and International Documentary Festival, Amsterdam. They are best known for experimental documentaries portray some of histories deepest ironies in a style that is highly watchable and often funny, despite the grave overtones of their larger message. Films selected for this program range across the anniversary of Hitler’s death, Japanese biological warfare in WWII and the sexual capital of the white man.

Suprematist Kapital (2006/5min/Chen Yin-ju and James T. Hong)
A Symbolic History of Kapital. Inspired by Kasimir Malevich's minimalist artworks and the struggles for resources in the age of peak oil, Suprematist Kapital was born of the want to create a visual artwork that could be displayed on many different-sized mediums regardless of resolution, e.g., theater screens, mobile devices, ipod's, etc. Where once technology as progress was an end in itself, it became the handmaiden of capitalist accumulation and war, and is now a form of capital itself in the age of peak oil.

Wounds That Never Heal
(2009/23min/ Chen Yin-ju and James T. Hong)
A short profile of the victims and lasting legacy of Unit 731 -- a World War II, Japanese, biological warfare facility. Following the first bombing of Tokyo by US forces, the Japanese punished entire villages and counties in China where the bombers crash landed by spraying diseases from crop-duster-like airplanes. The effects can still be seen on the bodies of those living in the region today.

Total Mobilization (2005/8min/Chen Yin-ju and James T. Hong)
Migration is fact; immigration is destiny. The disappearance of White America could mean the end of the United States of America, as we have known it. The West could be reduced to Europe and few lightly populated overseas European settler countries. Without America, the West becomes a miniscule and declining part of the world’s population on a small and inconsequential peninsula at the extremity of the Eurasian land mass. TOTAL MOBILIZATION is an evocative, ironic, and bombastic experimental video that ostensibly focuses on a group of struggling ants. The open-minded will see it as a trenchant metaphor of nativist fears; the closed-minded will see it as a document of the truth.

Transactions (2008/8min/Chen Yin-ju)
This video shows one example of how Asian parents devote themselves to their grown children. Here a mother works tirelessly for rich clients so she can send her daughter to study in the USA. The montage illustrates the detailed procedure of dressmaking, and the phone conversation covers credit card expenses, converted from US dollars to Taiwanese yuan.

Taipei 101: A Travelogue of Symptoms (2004/23min/James T. Hong)
In TAIPEI 101: A TRAVELOGUE OF SYMPTOMS an Asian American encounters the semblant operations of Americanization on a pilgrimage to Taiwan. He discovers that Taipei 101 -- currently the world's tallest building -- Taiwan's culture, and his own consciousnesses are indelibly marked by globalization, America, capitalism, and the transnational power of white men.

The Age of Stupid may be the most important film you’ll see this year, and the worldwide premier happens next Tuesday in 45+ countries around the world, including a free screening in Taipei. 特別放映《水乳交融》~~ 這個很色的嘍 ^^



大家好,我們遊牧影展突然有個比較特別的機會,這個星期六晚上8點能給大家播放一部由美國藝術家 Lawrence Weiner 拍的22分鐘短片電影《水乳交融》 (Water in Milk Exists),影片製作人平川典俊會在現場談談影片內容與自己的攝影創作。美國的重要藝術雜誌 Art Forum 如此評論《水乳交融》:「這部非敘述性A片充滿一群20幾歲者彼此操,吮,弄,手淫等行為,全部發生在紐約瑞士當代藝術研究院的Soho區空間與唐人街的攝影棚裡。在影片裡,激起性慾望的色情場面以及關於 "各人對現實的定義” 和 “弦理論” 的冗長而勉強的哲學想法一直交替,就像導演一直在玩一個讓我們感到激動的開關,性慾望的引起又開了又關了。」(閱讀原文)這麼說呢,大家大概已經明白,如果A片、gay片、手淫、口交會冒犯到你,那這場放映會就不是你的菜。影片會有中文字幕 (現在正很趕地做),放映前後也有中文的解釋。

若你沒聽過平川典俊,他來自日本,住在紐約,是一位國際藝術圈子裡有知名度的藝術家,最有 ~~嗯,或許可以說他具有 “名氣” 的攝影系列是由典俊要求很多女生是否可以借用她們的相機來拍她們的裙底風光而創作出來。這次的活動在非常廟藝文空間舉行,為呼應Chi-Wen 畫廊於9月12日舉辦的平川典俊個展 UNFOLD UNIVERSE,展覽於當日下午 3-6點開幕。放映會沒有入場費,但觀眾至少消費一杯飲料。總的來說這是瞭解古怪的平川典俊談論他的藝術,以及他如何遊走在情色邊緣的難得機會。

Water In Milk Exists: 9/12 @ VT Art Salon



Hi everybody. We quite suddenly were presented with the opportunity to show you something rather weird, a 22-minute film by American artist Lawrence Weiner called WATER IN MILK EXISTS. It happens this Saturday at 8pm, and the film's producer Noritoshi Hirakawa will be there to talk about both the film and his own work. Noritoshi is an interesting character, an internationally known art photographer who is famous for taking pictures of women's underwear. The screenign will take place at VT Art Salon, and admission only requires that you buy one drink.

But before you come, we should probably mention that if you are easily offended by porn, gay porn, blow jobs, or abstruse philosophy, this just might not be for you. Here is how one of the world's top art magazines Art Forum reviewed the film: "
This nonnarrative porn is full of twenty-somethings fucking, sucking, playing, and masturbating in the Swiss Institute’s SoHo loft and a Chinatown photo studio. Scenes alternate between often-thrilling hardcore porn and contrived and tedious philosophical musings about 'personal definitions of reality' and 'string theory.' Like a switch flicked too soon, stimulation teasingly turns on and off." (Read the entire review.) Also, the film is in English with Chinese subtitles. Discussions and an introduction to the film will be bilingual in English and Chinese.

This screening of Water in Milk Exists will be held in conjunction with Noritoshi's exhibition UNFOLD UNIVERSE at Chi-Wen Gallery, which opens earlier the same day from 3-6pm. This is a rare chance to hear the often outlandish Noritoshi discuss his art and its relation to pornography.
