At the same time it is also the story of a wife’s tragedy at losing her husband and on a third level John Torres own autobiographical footage, ranging from scenes of hanging out with his Manila crew to the Russian guide he fell in love with while really in Berlin. In everything, it is highly personal. And in the end, it is quite difficult to say whether it is fiction or non-fiction, and whether the terrorism is personal or global.

本片為台語電影。以前的人當兵不像現在。以前當兵放假回來，下次回來的日子就不知道是何時了。阿滿問英俊"下次，你什麼時候會再回來？" 英俊無法回答，阿滿只能騎腳踏車一個人哭著離開。當年當兵的人，只能藉由寫信來訴情衷。阿嬤的抽屜裡面，滿滿的都是阿公的信件。阿嬤每次想起與阿公年輕時的戀愛故事，即使阿公的模樣不像當年如此的帥氣瀟灑，但是阿嬤總肯定的說阿公的樣子一點都沒有變。"雖然人的外表跟環境一樣會隨著時間改變，但是不見的東西，只要藏在腦袋裡，就永遠不會不見了喔"。孫女時常想起阿嬤說的這一段話，阿公雖然已經離開人間，卻永遠活在阿嬤的心裡面 。本片由知名歌手羅美玲擔綱演出，並且主唱電影主題歌 "青春悲喜曲".

A heartbreaking story from Wenlou, a small village in central China, where more than 30% of the villagers are infected with HIV because they made a little extra money selling their blood in the early 90s. The director Chen Weijun spent months in the village with farmer Ma Shengyi, his wife, and three children, all of whom bud the oldest child are infected. Chen described his approach, saying, “I started my shooting along this family’s courtyard in the beginning of the summer in 2001, trying to bring a live picture of the real life of this ordinary family. And the following movie is what I saw with my own very eyes.” A UN survey estimated that 250,000 people in seven provinces in Central China were HIV-infected as a result of a blood donor program in the early 1990s. The figure may very well be much higher.

It shows an impoverished kid with a mohawk rockin’ away in the landfill of the global village.

Recently new student activist groups have taken up new causes like Treasure Hill and the Lesheng Sanatorium. Every aspect of the corporation's business was cross-examined: from junk food and McJobs, to animal cruelty, environmental damage and the company's advertising to children. This film is not about hamburgers. It is about the power multinational corporations wield over our everyday lives and two unlikely heroes who are changing McWorld.

Lynn Chen comes to cinema with both a cinephile’s love of movies and radical suspicion of there falsity. Often self-conscious and very ‘meta’, the two films in this program come in fragments, some of which are staged and some of which are not, but in the end, if we ask where reality is, we find it exists in between them.

你所不知道的北韓與地下電影︰

第六屆城市遊牧影展

台灣唯一純種的獨立地下影片展「城市遊牧影展」又來了，今年特別引進了台灣電影界中非常少見的北韓紀錄片。一年一度的「城市遊牧影展」將在今年的四月 27日在台北藝術村開幕，一連十天的舉行，這也是「城市遊牧影展」在台灣的第六屆。

這次參加「城市遊牧影展」的影片分為六大主題(地方紀錄、鏡困亞洲、鯨豚…等等)，內容涵蓋了各種有趣的、實驗的，甚至是奇怪的長短片，曾在2006年參加台北雙年展的吳俊輝導演也有策劃兩部精彩短片節目參展，這次主辦單位廣招台灣以及國外的地下傑出導演們共襄盛舉，最後共有包括台灣、香港、中國、新加坡、菲律賓、泰國、印尼、美國、英國、加拿大等地的七十多位的導演所完成共九十多部影片一起參展，內容相當豐富。

今年的第六屆「城市遊牧影展」有強調了社會概念議題的電影像是談到速食霸主的「卯上麥當勞」、牽扯到近來頗受觀注的樂生療養院以及寶藏巖等社會議題的「樂生活」、「寶藏巖」，同時也特別邀請在北韓有12年經驗的紀錄片製做人Nick Bonner到台北來放映他的兩部記錄片，但是在這些嚴肅的議題中，仍然有一些有 趣的電影，台灣本土導演林世勇談到台灣BBS文化的木偶人系列電影、或是暗帶政治諷刺的「全民懂ㄘ」，為整個「城市遊牧影展」帶來些許歡樂的氣氛。

在開幕的四月27號和28號，「城市遊牧影展」主辦單位會在台北藝術村的室外廣場架設戶外放映區，讓觀眾可以在充斥著商業電影院的台北市區中，再找回一個重溫「蚊子電影院」開放樂趣的電影觀賞空間，這又是個重度電「癮」患者出動的好機會。

在「城市遊牧影展」舉辦的前一週，像是「卯上麥當勞」等等一些主打片會先行播放，如果各位媒體朋友有興趣採訪 Nick Bonner (北韓紀錄片)，吳俊輝(追趕跑跳碰 )、Fanny Armstrong (卯上麥當勞) 等等電影人的話，歡迎聯絡「城市遊牧影展」 主辦單位。

IT’S ON!!! NT$5000 Prize for best short film from Taiwan


Urban Nomad, Taiwan's only underground film festival, is seeking entries for this year’s big to-do, which will be held in Taipei in late April/ early May.

We want films that push boundaries, that challenge conventions, that hit home, and are generally not included in other film festivals: experimental film/ video, animation, comedic shorts, political documentary, music documentary, skateboard/ surfing, gender, migrant workers, Internet shorts, North Korea and Iraq.

Due to our limited schedule, there are only so many films we can show, so shorter films (under 15 minutes) stand a greater chance of getting accepted. Also, films need to be accessible to both English and Chinese speaking audiences, which means films with subtitles and subject matter pertinent to Taiwan will be given priority.

If your film is accepted, you will be invited to an opening party, toasted royally, and potentially asked to speak before the screening of your film. We are also offering a cash prize of NT$5,000 for the best original short from Taiwan -- regardless of category.

URBAN NOMAD FILM FEST: MISSION STATEMENT

Urban Nomad Film Fest was founded in Taipei in 2002 by two expatriate journalists in Taiwan, David Frazier and Sean Scanlan, and is the only festival in Taiwan that is both fully independent and receives no government funding. The ongoing project is to create a community-oriented film environment and put an end to the impersonal ‘black box’ movie theater environment where hundreds of people can watch films without really interacting with each other. We’ve held our five festivals to date in warehouse or outdoor spaces at Taipei’s Huashan Arts District (2002-2004, 2006), Treasure Hill (2005) and Taipei Artist Village (2007-present). We’ve specially curated film and video programs for art events, including the 2007 Scope Art Fairs in Basel and Miami, the 2008 Taipei Biennial, and Art Taipei 2009. We've also toured with our programs to the Hsinchu Image Museum, small cafes in eastern Taiwan, and Videotage in Hong Kong. Generally, our events have a strong social element (centered around the bar) and a DIY punk rock aesthetic.

Content has been socially motivated, growing with and out of digital and grassroots film movements: underground, alternative, digital, arthouse, DVcam, Flash, and web-based films. In 2005 we showed Martyn See’s Singapore Rebel, a banned film in Singapore about an opposition party candidate who is so sensitive there that after the a respected Western media outlet, the Far Eastern Economic Review, recently interviewed him, the issue was banned by Singapore’s government. But even though we showed this film and will continue to show films like it, we’re not advocating any political positions other than the right for people’s voices to be heard and for debates to take place. Most of our content is in fact light-hearted shorts, and has included everything from professionally produced comedies by Taiwan’s ArcLight production house to amateur skateboard and surf videos.

In 2005 and 2006, Urban Nomad began connecting with festivals and filmmakers in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and China. This helped us realize that new film networks are happening, and what’s more, they have a lot in common with each other, a lot to share, and a lot they can teach each other. The idea is to think globally and act locally, to realize that Malaysian kids, for example, have a lot to say to Taiwanese kids and vice versa, even though the major networks connecting them now are pop music, Hollywood film, and big media. It doesn’t have to be that way, and that’s one area where we hope to make a difference.

Urban Nomad is almost entirely self-funded. The budget is bare bones. We remain independent and committed to our ideals.

勇於批判的知名導演麥可摩爾都讚賞不已的紀錄電影「史上最憤怒的男人」、紐約次文化工作室Alleged和塗鴉人、電影導演、展覽者之間的故事「美麗失敗者」、古根漢幻覺藝術家與樂團Animal Collective聯手衝擊震撼之作「Animal Collective之異界幻想」、北歐最大的搖滾音樂季紀錄片「北歐新搖滾世代」，還有中國當代批判藝術家艾未未專題等，而這些僅僅是2011第10屆城市遊牧影展第一波參展名單！

影展簡介

「城市遊牧影展 Urban Nomad Film Fest」2002年成立於台北，每年四月藉由短片與地下獨立電影放映創造出嶄新的社群感 (community feeling) ，至今已一口氣舉辦九年，今年2011年將盛大邁入第10屆。我們支持與鼓勵獨立電影與製片社群，除了組織有別傳統的放映活動，更與鄰近國家作交流。影展曾經於台北華山藝文特區、寶藏岩、政治大學、台中20號倉庫等藝文空間舉辦放映活動，近年也分別於台北藝術村、南海藝廊和新竹影像博物館放映了上百支影片，並在2008年參與了台北雙年展。除此之外，我們也舉辦巡迴國際影像藝術展，把來自台灣、中國、香港、印尼、菲力賓、新加坡等世界各國家的影片帶到瑞士巴塞爾、美國邁阿密和香港等國，以影像為媒介與世界居民交流。獨特的電影放映空間是城市遊牧的特色之一，我們希望除了傳統的「黑盒子」電影院概念（觀眾在鴉雀無聲的戲院內看電影），另類的觀賞空間體驗更能解放觀眾，提供多元雙向的電影溝通的機會。我們相信，電影不只是一種娛樂，前後左右的觀眾也不需要只是陌生人甲乙丙丁。畢竟，影史上的第一部電影可是在巴黎一間小咖啡館裡放映，人群興奮又恐懼地對著銀幕敲桌大喊呢！

「城市遊牧影展」競賽單元影片大多為來自台灣的影像創作，包含了新一代的年輕導演、海外留學生、居住台灣的外籍人士、台僑等各種身分的導演。2005年，我們致力與鄰近國家的小影展作交流與交換，開始收集了來自香港、新加坡、馬來西亞、菲律賓、泰國、印尼等國家的獨立影片。播放影片的同時，我們發覺，不分地域或國籍，這些來自世界各地的影片擁有的觀點、追求的議題、尋答的問題其實經常很相似。我們更注意到，地區性的地下影片網羅也藉此形成，而未來將要朝此趨勢繼續發展。

影展的內容是數位片為主。對我們來說，放映嚴肅的記錄片也好，恶搞的網路短片也沒問題。城市遊牧在2006年放映過曾被新加坡政府禁播的〈新加坡反叛份子〉，一部記錄在野黨後選人徐順全為民主鬥爭過程的影片。往年也曾經播放過拍攝於以色列、非洲賴比瑞亞、斯里蘭卡海嘯災難之後等地方，及關懷人權的影片，更在2011年策劃中國人權藝術家艾未未專題，邀請相關學者作家進行座談討論。除此之外，每年也都會播放一些滑板與衝浪片，這是我們一貫的特色。

說到資金，其效果在努力不在預算，成本的全部都是Dave 和 Sean 兩位策展人的荷包錢以及一些支持獨立電影的單位甘心贊助，所以需要靠售票賺回來。票價便宜，目標是打平罷了，這究竟是藝術活動！

The last night of Urban Nomad, Esther and some other very cool students from Chengchi University in the Taipei suburb of Mucha approached us about showing some films on campus. We're more than happy and they've done most of the work, so this Wednesday, we're rescreening three documentaries plus the trailer for the Chengchi U. graduation film fest.

一個在台灣土生土長的混血小孩，以他還不算長的成長經歷，娓娓道出台灣種族/認同等議題。

樂會北京 (85分鐘) 導演: 林莉
樂會北京” 是一部道地的公路紀錄片，老老實實地紀錄著一群埋首於馬來西亞地下音樂圈的華人，到北京 “樹村” 生活的一個月。 “樹村”是個老胡同區，也是大陸有名的搖滾村，電影 “北京樂與路” 便以其為藍圖。真實的它只是一處被居民遺棄的斷垣殘壁。大馬的一行人，除了將馬來西亞的華語搖滾樂帶入與自己同根生的北京地下樂圈，更渴望再次擁抱曾經的搖滾夢…過程中，他們也遇到中國搖滾夫崔健，出名樂評人顏峻等表性的人物，算是大陸搖滾歷史中的重要時刻的一部經典紀錄片。

Festival Recap

A couple nights before the opening film, Sean came up to me and said, "We got a big problem." And I was like, "What?" And he said, "We got 400 hamburgers and 50 cases of beer." This was all coming from our lone sponsor, a pub in Taipei called the Tavern. Sean continued, "Dude, all I asked him for was a plate of cold cuts!?"

So I guess we are the only film festival I can think of with a constantly running BBQ grill - hamburgers and sausages - and all the beer it can drink. But first of all, the festival was a big success, not just from the standpoint of being a "film party," which we've always managed to do pretty well, but also in bringing some really fresh films to serious film viewers in a film watching environment. This was especially the case with Surviving Beijing (樂會北景), which attracted a lot of interest. (Big props here to director Lin Li and Mak in KL - I'll be in touch with you soon - and also Merv in Manila for turning us on to the film.)

I'll post some pics of the space soon, but to describe it, it is a freshly rennovated warehouse in Taipei's Huashan Cultural Center (華山文化園區), a defunct brewery salvaged by artists and now run by the government as an arts center. The space was big, so we hung our huge 4 x 6 meter screen at the back end and put the bar a little more than midway back so the conversation noise wouldn't bother people at the front. It's great having a huge space like this to deal with, as you can create a few different areas. BBQ was out front, and we got some great signage from Canadian graf artist DBSK1.

Total attendance for the four days came to around 300, with 130-140 of those on Saturday night, including the singer Faith Yang (楊乃文), who was there to see Hey Jimi (黑吉米), the documentary about the half-black Taiwanese drag queen and the whole slate of identity issues wrapped up there. Apparently they're friends.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, and especially those who offered to help with future Urban Nomads. We'll be in touch! And for everyone else, see you again next year!

A documentary that is also a tale of absolute and miserable failure. In 2000, a Malaysian-Chinese rocker contingent including two bands and an cutting-edge magazine went to Beijing to slum it with the rockers of Beijing’s Tree Village. The community has since been bulldozed in China’s mad rush for development but was a semi-legendary settlement where rock musicians went to drop out as a kind of protest against a society where they found no place for themselves. But as outsiders, the Malaysian rockers quickly came up against their limits and the ends begin to fray. But in the process, they get an inside look at Beijing’s nascent rock scene, interviewing the likes of China’s father of rock ‘n roll, Cui Jian, the young music critic Yan Jun, and other key figures. In total, it is both a profound study in falling to pieces and a unique moment in time.
這是一部記述了一個來自馬來西亞的華裔搖滾樂團與雜誌,在北京郊區搖滾客住傳奇的樹村的經驗。樹村是個老胡同區，早已被打掉為都市發展計畫，對搖滾介原來是個去混而過很破爛生活的地放，因為覺得在社會已沒地位的。雖然語言通，不過到了北京這些搖滾華裔很快就發現跨不了很多文化與溝通的差距，結果就是殘酷的失敗。但過程中，他們也遇到中國搖滾夫催健，出名樂評人顏峻等表性的人，作為記錄片就算是大陸搖滾歷史中的重要時刻。

Over years of pushing for political alternatives, Chee, a middle-class father of two, has been harrassed, sued, fined, and jailed – mainly for his simple existence as an opposition party candidate to the virtual monarcy of the People’s Action Party (PAP), which has ruled Singapore since the end of British colonial rule. Last month Chee was again put in prison by Singapore’s government. URBAN NOMAD 2006 WANTS UR FILMS

ENTRY DEADLINE: MARCH 15

Thatsmotherfuckinright, Urban Nomad 2006 is on, Taiwan's only true underground film fest, now a node in Asian underground networks, trying to unite the underground, a peaceful anti-nationalism. We’ve already got films from BKK, Singapore, HK, Philippines, of course TPE and elsewhere in the region. The festival will happen sometime in April 2006, be all over Taiwan, and maybe go beyond. We will debut in Taipei, and we will bring the bottle openers and portable screen and munch on crudite in the light of 40,000 lumens. Calling for submissions now!!! The application form is below.

ABOUT SUBMISSIONS:
Application deadline: March 15
Acceptable film formats: MPEG, VCD, or DVD format.
Subtitling: We are trying to make the festival fully bilingual (Chinese + English) this year, so those films with subtitles will be prefered. ALL FILMS must include a transcript either in Chinese or English. We reserve the right to refuse films without subtitles.
Fee: There is no fee, but we will ask you to sign a release giving us permission to show your film.

Another one of our sidelines: this event, presented this year by the Taipei Foreign Correspondents Club and the Tavern, is annual celebration of the life of the slain journalist/classical musician and his parents' steadfast commitment to "harmony for humanity." Formerly attracting as many as 200 attendants at a night venue, this year’s will be an all-day event to accommodate more musical performers. Special guests include: MILK, BIG BRASS BALLS, TARRY BUSH, MARK ARCHERY, BO PO MO FO, JEFF AND SLAUGHTER, .22, and SPOON DE CHOP. Come and support the notion of spreading peace and harmony through music. The Tavern will provide plenty of beer and barbeque.

Word gets around apparently. There are up to four new entries for UN05Taichung if the films actually get to us in time, and we're very pleased at the chance of showing some new stuff in Taichung that we've not yet played in Taipei. Above is a .jpg from one that's in the mail. In email, the director described it thusly:

"It is risque and contains graphic sexual content and has themes of suicide, masturbation, self reflection, and childish escapism."

Taipei resident Picot filmed this footage in Sri Lanka during the second month after the killer tsunami devastated the area. She turns her camera lens to the ongoing relief effort and political turmoil of the island nation.
