HK Flashback

The Imperial Cinema in Wanchai, Hong Kong.

Nick Bonner, producer of Crossing the Line, in a Q&A at Wanchai's Imperial Cinema, March 8, 2008.

Hong Kong's Wanchai was a perfect fit for UN, a place where you could find 24hr kebabs, warm cans of San Miguel beer with a floor show, and the dusty, once-grand, Imperial Theater.

She was in bad shape when we found her, still sporting tacky posters from her last commercial run --- "The Day After Tomorrow" (2004). But the biggest insult was one 200-seat theater which was transformed into a warehouse for thousands of unsold VHS machines!

We buffed her hallway mirrors, turned on the chandelier, and stretched out the red-carpet for the local premiere of Nick Bonner's documentary "Crossing The Line", the tear jerking tale of Comrade Joe who is now the lone US-native living in the DPRK.

It was a capacity, standing room crowd for the screening. Some didn't seem to mind as they helped themselves to the bar or enjoyed a smoke by an open window.

On Sunday, it was a Mexican brunch, some college hoops, and a hike up 17-floors to stage Wanchai's first rooftop screening at Kluubb.

Thanks to local crews Videotage, Microwave, Kluubb and everyone who washed, schlepped, and partied with us in Hong Kong.

It was sick.

Urban Nomad Hong Kong: March 7-9

Whoopee! We're going to Hong Kong, and we're totally stoked about working with local HK groups Videotage and Microwave, who are helping us put on a 3-day festival right in the guts of Wanchai. Check out all the info on the Videotage website.

The programming will include our favorite Taiwanese stuff from our 2007 festival plus two feature films: Crossing the Line tells of the last American defector from the Korean war and his life in North Korea today. Pervert's Guide to Cinema features rock star philosopher taking a look at nearly a century of film history and telling us that "Cinema is the ultimate pervert art."

The best part will be Saturday night, March 8, when we re-appropriate Wanchai's Imperial Cinema. Having been closed and out-of-business for years, the Imperial Cinema remains as it was 30 years ago with the original lights, decorations, mirrors and movie posters from the 80’s. Years of non-use and neglect have left the interior theatre spaces and seats deteriorated. In hopes to make use of the rare and retro cinema space, (before land investors come to reclaim and gentrify the building) we will be taking over a section of the central hallway for a special feature-night screening event.

For specific times and locations, check the press release.

UN 2009 CALL FOR FILMS!

URBAN NOMAD 2009 CALL FOR FILMS!
NT$12,000 in prizes! New section for video art! We need volunteers!

The Urban Nomad Film Fest is now accepting entries for its 2009 festival, to take place in Taipei and Hsinchu in late April and early May. We will give NT$12,000 in prizes for the best short local films. The entry deadline is March 1.

We are also looking for VOLUNTEERS, especially translators and event staff. If you’re interested, please apply through our website.

People keep asking us what our theme is, so we came up with “Sex, Drugs and Human Rights” for 2009. If you have no idea what that means, don’t worry about it. We’re looking for films that are: weird, funny, extreme, socially concerned, political, sex-related, documentary, rock ‘n roll, skate/surf, experimental, etc., etc.

This year we will create a second, special screen for video art. Get excited. It’ll be near the beer.

Rules and Suggestions:
- Films under 15 minutes stand a greater chance of getting accepted.
- Priority will be given to films with both Chinese and English: in other words, Chinese language films should English subtitles, and all other films should have Chinese subtitles.
- Films should be produced no later than 2007.
- Do not submit the same film you submitted in previous years.
- You must fill out one application form per film.
- Each film should be on its own DVD.
- You can send more than one DVD per package.
- Please send regular mail via the post office, no need for express or courier mail.

If your film or is accepted, you will be invited to an opening party, toasted royally, and if you can speak at the screening of your film, that would be awesome!

Volunteers:
- Translators: English to Chinese translation subtitles for three to five films. English to Chinese interpretation for one or two director talks.
- Event staff: For screenings, music events and parties. Come have fun with us!

International Applications: We are very happy to receive submissions from outside Taiwan and even outside of Asia. Every year we invite several international feature-length films and documentaries to screen as part of the festival and in recent years we have invited directors to speak. If you have a feature-length film, please let us know about it by late January, which is when we usually decide on feature programming. We are willing to show any important or new ideas, approaches or histories in film, but also please remember that we are fundamentally a local film festival for Taiwan, and it is only from this position that we can establish links to the Asia region and the rest of the world. Films with Chinese are logistically much easier for us to show, and we’re always looking for great films from Taiwan’s neighbors. That said, if you believe you have a great film that fits our style, we’re very happy to take a look.

ENTRY DEADLINE: March 1, 2009
FORMAT: DVD or MPEG2 (NTSC)
ADDRESS: 5F, #16 Jinmen St., Taipei, Taiwan

PLEASE SEND IN THIS FORM WITH SUBMISSION!!!

Scope Miami recap

The Cuban barbecue, the $17 martinis, the sunshine and the kids on low rider bicycles. Miami wuz booty poppin' awesome. Big props to Alex, Jordan, Mo and the whole Scope crew for bringing us down and letting us blast videos on a 16x20 foot wall at the entrance to the Scope Art Fair (Miami, Dec. 5-9, 2007), that could also be viewed from the reverse side in the VIP lounge. Our projection tower and booth was an incredible cardboard construction by Boris Hoppek of heliumcowboy artspace - it was the sweetest collaboration we've ever been a part of.

Content-wise, we more or less VJed our way through the five days with classics from the Urban Nomad hard drive, a bunch of new material, and REAL ART given to us to play, including the world premier of DJ Spooky's New York is Now (via Irvine Contemporary) and the very oldschool Tooth and Nail: Film and Video 1970-74 by Dennis Oppenheim. The final day, we showed 20+ films by local Miami directors and were really impressed by their work.

We also sold a few independent films, projects we support like Wholphin, Pervert's Guide to Cinema and director-activist Franny Armstrong. In addition to generating a little financial support through sales, there is a symbolic importance to having cheap, independently produced DVDs in the generally much more high-flying economy of an art fair.

Now, here's the slide show:

Projection tower with our 20-foot screen behind it. View from the main entrance of the Scope Art Fair. Who the thumbs-up kid is, we have no fucking idea.

Front view of our installation. On screen: Marc D'Andre.

Sean (left) and Dave, the night before opening.

One of two 12,000-lumen projectors we used.

Dave gave a presentation, followed by one by Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky. Martin Irvine (left) of Irvine Contemporary makes the introductions.

Sculpture by Boris Hoppek. Our projection booth is housed inside, as is the projector. It was like a fort.

Boris Hoppek, who made our projection tower. To do "legal" graffiti art in Barcelona, where he lives, he told me he collects cardboard boxes from the garbage, builds them into walls on front of walls, and then spray paints them.

View inside the projection booth. Hi Mo! Thanks for the visit!

Our indie DVD distro. We sold various indie DVDs, including Pervert's Guide to Cinema (featuring Slavoj Zizek, by Sophie Feinnes), two issues of the Wholphin DVD magazine (by Wholphin), McLibel and Drowned Out (by Franny Armstrong), The Naked Feminist (by Louisa Achille) and a compilation of Taiwanese short animations.

And of course there were the t-shirts, in summer colors. Our meager earnings from these went some small ways towards subsidizing the $17 martinis we were more or less obliged to drink - there is less irony in this remark than you think - to keep up with the high rolling South Beach crowd.

A satisfied customer (with one of Boris's paintings in the background).

Miami Premiers

We premiered a bunch of new stuff in Miami, some of it new for us, and a lot of it new for the art world, not least of all the 20+ Miami submissions in the post below. But before we get to that, here's what we brought with us from Taipei, including short films and video art.

The Fabled Shots by Su Hui-yu (蘇匯宇)
single channel video, courtesy of the artist and VT Art Space

Su claims the subject here is a synthesis of a terrorist and a victim. During one showing, a woman (one of the exhibitors) walked up to me and said, "While the air conditioning is broken, could you play something a little more cheerful?"

Flov'er by Huang Bo-chih (黃博志)
single channel video, courtesy of the artist

This video was made with a scanner, and Huang used more than 10,000 scans of flowers in its making. Other works we showed by him were:
Sweet Dream by Huang Bo-chih
Self Portrait No. 1 by Huang Bo-chih

Introduction (序)by Kuo I-Chen (郭奕臣)
single channel video, courtesty Galerie Grand-Siecle

This one is very windy.

Visitor by Wang Ya-hui (王雅慧)
single channel video, courtesy Galerie Grand Siecle

Notice the floating cloud in the upper right hand corner. It is a trompe l'oeil that floats through the entire video piece.

Portrait of a Sino-American Frienship by James Hong
short experimental film, courtesy of the filmmaker

Covert footage of a fat American doing a business deal while getting a pedicure somewhere in modern China.

Music video for "Joys of the Ferryboat of Mercy" by LTK Commune, directed by Chen Yi-ren (MV:歡喜渡慈航 樂團:濁水溪公社 導演:陳奕仁)

Airport by Chen Wan-jen (陳萬仁)
single channel video, courtesy of the artist

A.T.P.M Structure by Li Chieh-hua
single channel video, courtesy of the artist

Walm-Art by David Frazier
stupid channel video, by Urban Nomad

Ok, it was kind of stupid, kind of obvious, but maybe it was better than the "Fuck Art Fairs" t-shirts someone else was selling. Anyway, I saw Jordan chuckle.

Mirror by Dominik Tyliszczak
single channel video, courtesy of the artist

We also showed The Wig by Dominik Tyliszczak.

From Demo Reel & Film Excerpts 99-06 by Coan Nichols and Rick Charnoski
short film compilation, courtesy the filmmakers

This is some of the coolest, most beautiful skate footage we've ever seen or shown. The poetry of skating pipes, pools and other shenanigans. We also showed their Randome Shorts video.

Ricochet by Greendot Films
short film, courtesy of the filmmakers

This was so brutal it was totally awesome!!! It comes off a Greendot Films compilation called Three Legged Legs.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain by M. Ganzglass
single channel video, courtesy of the filmmaker

Cable cars suspended in a cloud, footage from China that's both poetic and pregnant with metaphor.

Fission by Chang Kun-I
animated short, courtesy of the filmmaker

Kunstmarktbasel

Camouflage by Daniel Staudenmann

Parade by Reto Jeltsch

Shere II by Chris Sigdell

Thanks to our friend Daniel Staudenmann, a curator at the Cargo Bar in Basel, we had a sweet program from the local Basel artists (in other words, not Art Basel artists) of Kunstmarktbasel. Here's the lineup:

Shere II by Chris Sigdell
Camouflage by Daniel Staudenmann
Jubilee by Liliane Freiermuth
Engel by Lukas Buergin
Fragmente by Markus Buser
Schwere der Dinge by Reinhard Wanner
Parade by Reto Jeltsch
The Beast Show by Reto Jeltsch

And last but not least, we showed a high speed film of a bald muscleman breaking flaming cinder blocks with his fist by Matt Luem.

The Miami Local Program

First of all, major props to Miami's local film community. On the last day of Scope Miami 07 (Sun, Dec. 9), we screened a special program of films and video art by local directors and artists as well as a few hand-offs from the globe-trotting carnies of the art crowd. We got a pile of submissions that I'm still rewatching and sorting out, but the important thing is, while still on site, we put together a special 2-hour program of seriously caliente local stuff.

Here's the playlist:

Maps by Fred Karrenberg
Ucelli by Renzo Ortega

Serial Cereal by Mariella Rossel

Candy Melt by Stian Roenning

Bread Performance by Stian Roenning

MIAMI – SCOPE, Miami’s original emerging art fair, returns for its fifth year in Miami, expanded in size and global in reach, with 95 exhibitors from 28 countries, and a new 60,000 square foot pavilion at 101 NW 34th Street (NW 2nd Avenue) in Roberto Clemente Park in the Wynwood Art District.

Over the past five years, SCOPE, the first art fair to bring emerging galleries such as Peres Projects, Daniel Reich, John Connelly Presents, Taxter & Spengemann and Marella Gallery to a wider audience, has given many now-prominent emerging artists like Assume Astro Vivid Focus, Scissor Sisters and Black Label their first significant international exposure.

With total sales of nearly $100 million and attendance of over 250,000 visitors, SCOPE has drawn wide media attention including CBS News, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Art in America, and ArtNet Magazine, which wrote, “Of the various art fairs in Miami, it was SCOPE that served up the best, both inside and out.”

7 daze of fun @ SCOPE basel

Here are some photos of our fun-filled week on the fringe of the superbowl of art whoring. Everyone tells us we were a big hit, and I think the reason is because we tried NOT to show ANY ART! Actually, we did, but we didn't spend much time billing it as art. For what it was worth, we had a good time.

Okay, our setup was in the bar/foyer of the SCOPE BASEL art fair. See for yourself:

URBAN NOMAD @ SCOPE BASEL JUNE 11-17

Scope中我門會把當天的放影時間表公佈在下面

The Scope Art Fair has named Urban Nomad Film Fest's director David Frazier as recipient of its "Independent Curator Award" and invited Urban Nomad to show its program of films at its upcoming fair in Basel, Switzerland from June 11-17. The screenings will take place in a booth immediately everyone walking through the fair’s main entrance and will include most of the 28+ hours of programming at 2007 Urban Nomad Taipei as well as additional segments of video art, films by the Philippine rights and film collective Southern Tagalog Exposure, and other recent discoveries.

During the fair, daily screening schedules will be announced below this post.

Urban Nomad's big mission or whatever is to put an end to the impersonal "black box" of the movie theater, to stop this situation where people just watch the screen and ignore each other. Sure, film can be profound, but on the whole we are against elitist film nerds (and art nerds) because movies (and art) are in the end for everybody. That's why we show both video art and skateboarding videos, and also why we'll be at Scope Basel, an art fair that's not afraid of the fringe, where we'll show some crazyass shit on a screen at one end of the fair's exhibition hall next to a bar. It'll happen at least ten hours a day for the duration of the fair.

Urban Nomad is based in Taipei and has been held over the last six years in warehouses, train stations, courtyards and lawns, but never in the same space twice. We show films from Taiwan and all around southeast Asia, North America and also Taiwan's "arch-enemy" China.

In doing this festival, we've seen an underground or indie network forming directly between scenes wherever they happen to be. Yeah, yeah, we know the Internet is a "second channel" for bypassing pop music, Hollywood and big media, and we'd be idiots if we didn't tap into it. But unlike computers, we bring people face to face. The idea is to think globally and act locally, to realize that Malaysian kids, for example, have a lot to say to Taiwanese kids and vice versa, and work for a new kind of "virtual" community.

K, cool shit from Urban Nomad 2007 includes at least 6 hours of programming from the Axis of Evil, including documentaries from North Korea and Iran; shorts by Eko Nugroho, an Indonesian whose cartoons are like an anti-capitalist version of the tripped out intros to Monty Python's Flying Circus; we have a computer-animated saga of flame wars in Taiwan's university Internet bulletin boards by Lin Shi-yong, a film that’s been downloaded tens of thousands of downloads but never entered a serious film festival; video works by Taiwanese bluechip artists, including Chen Chieh-ren, Peng Hong-chih and Kuo I-chen; weird, hilarious selections from the DVD magazine Wholphin, a multimedia spin-off of the San Francisco-based indie literary publishing house McSweeneys; and oh yeah, all kinds of home movies about skateboarding, surfing and one Super8, DIY parody of Star Wars where the Force = marijuana.

Boilerplates: The Urban Nomad Film Fest was founded in Taipei in 2002 by two expatriate journalists, David Frazier and Sean Scanlan. In its sixth edition, in April-May 2007, it screened over 100 films and 28 hours of unique programming.
Scope is a cutting edge fair for contemporary art founded in 2002. It has been held New York, Miami, Los Angeles, London, and the Hamptons and this year debuts in Basel.

UN07 - DAY 11 - MAY 6, 2007

We rounded out the fest with a bang at Nanhai art gallery. The highlights were a packed house for Friday nights lineup by programmer Tony Wu. It featured Tung-wang Wu's segment, which gave rise to some semi-serious debate on Taiwanese identity. A second director in focus, Lynn Chen, showed two films on Saturday.

Lynn Chen talks about her "Seven Scenes About Love" and "Flight to Yesterday."

Ms. Ding from Taiwan Public Television was also there Friday working on a program about Taiwanese identity.

Tung-wang also has a friend at the Liberty Times, which provided this coverage.
